History of Moldova Red Cross is closely linked to the history of the country. That's why Moldova RedCross Society, as public association with legal status was created much later than the appearance of the first National Red Cross Societies (1864).

On 1st of December, 1992, under the Art. 26 of the First Geneva Convention, Moldova Red Cross Society was recognized by Presidential Decree as an autonomous public organization that carries out its activity on the basis of the Fundamental Principles of the International Movement of Red Cross and Red Crescent.

But this isn't the date of the foundation of Moldova Red Cross, and a new page in its history.

Throughout its history, Moldova Red Cross has conducted a wide activity aimed to alleviating human suffering, victims of wars, natural and social disasters.

With a well organized structure, Red Cross was present in every locality of the country, in most organizations and institutions.

This allowed Moldova Red Cross, depending on the country's needs, to get involved in solving or reducing existing problems. If a century back the organization run campaigns against malaria and typhus, today Red Cross is working in preventing and combating HIV/ AIDS, TB and avian influenza, involving each time in the priority public health problems.

In the post-war period was created the Visiting Nurses Service for home care of war invalids that is working till present time, but the activity area of this Service is much broader now.

In the same period and until the end of the '60s, within the Red Cross, in addition to district committees, there were training schools for the visiting nurses, who through their daily work have contributed and still are contributing to the improving of community health.

On November, 12, 1999, the Parliament of Republic of Moldova adopted the Law of the Republic of Moldova Nr.673-XIV regarding the use and protection of the Red Cross emblem.

On May, 10, 2001 the Parliament of Republic of Moldova adopted the Law on the Red Cross Society of Moldova, which entered into force on June, 30, 2001. (See Official Gazette of the Republic of Moldova no. 64-66/463 from 22.06.2001).

On October, 24, 2001, Moldova Red Cross Society was recognized by the International Committee of the Red Cross as a member with full rights within the International Movement of Red Cross and Red Crescent, and on November 7, became also a member of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. This historic event opened new perspectives of development for the Society and imposed great responsibilities for its activity.

Today, participating in mass immunization against measles and rubella population, prevention of avian flu, HIV/ AIDS, etc., helping victims of natural or tehnogen disasters, providing home care through visiting nurses, promoting blood donation, promoting human values, Moldova Red Cross is achieving the idea that is at the origins of the Red Cross - protecting human dignity.

Moldova Red Cross Society is a charitable organization that is part of the International Movement of Red Cross and Red Crescent, which brings together 186 National Societies and more than 500 million members.
